the better world handbook

Action #10:
Join an organization you care about

Have you ever felt alone in your desire to make the world a better place? Ever wonder if what you do really makes a difference? Have no fear. You don't have to do it all by yourself. There are literally millions of people working all over the globe to bring peace and justice to this world. Groups of organized, forward-looking people with a deep-seeded desire for justice and equality have always been the most important catalysts for bringing about a better world.

Joining together with our neighbors and other like-minded citizens creates the potential for significant positive social change in our communities and around the world. Successful acts of cooperation and solidarity create momentum that empowers our communities, and propel our vision of justice into the future. Your single voice becomes a deafening roar and your single action can become part of a social movement when you join with others to build a better world. All of us have the opportunity to join a legacy of extraordinary ordinary folks who come together with others and create a better world and a sense of hope for the future.

It's inspiring to see the number of organizations that work for a better world on a daily basis. Now is our time to stand up and make a difference.

The easiest way to support an organization is to become a member. This usually involves sending a small donation and keeping informed of the group's work. Members often wait in the wings to become involved when the organization most needs their efforts.

Many of us would like to support the great work of organizations that reflect our values-if we just had enough time. Getting involved in an organization may seem like an overwhelming commitment but remember that involvement is not an all-or-nothing endeavor. Figure out how much commitment is sustainable for you and then just go get involved-even if it's only a few hours a month! Becoming involved can enrich your life as you get to know other like-minded people, and spend your time contributing to a better world.
